If your resume is considered to be the entire movie, depicting minute details of who you are, then in comparison, a Cover Letter is the trailer. For the lesser cinephiles out there, a Cover Letter is a prologue of a book. 

A Cover letter helps you to demonstrate the best combination of your skills, knowledge and work experience which fits best with the job description you are applying for, ideally in the form of CV bullet points. A good Cover letter works towards linking your traits, understanding of the work, and abilities to perform tasks with that of the requirements of the recruiter.

A cover letter should, in essence, be quick to read. In these 5-7 seconds, you are required to highlight those qualities in you which the recruiters are looking for. And what better way to put information for a nice and quick read, other than bullet points? None. Bullet points will help you stand out to your hiring manager almost immediately.

CV Bullet points are not a substitution for paragraphs. So, do not turn your bullet points into short paragraphs. In order to grasp the attention of your hiring managers, all you need to do is use concise statements in each bullet point you make.

One point should demonstrate one idea/trait or qualification you possess. Do not elongate by using too many conjunctions unless it is absolutely necessary.

Make sure to structure your qualifications and list them according to the job requirements for which you are applying. That means the closest of traits and experiences which matches with the job description goes first and the least of the matches goes last.

One more aspect of a good covering letter is to use ‘action verbs’ and ‘keywords’ in your bulletin points. These keywords may be job-specific words, industry-related words and phrases or you can just pick them up from the job posting/advertisement.

Bulletin points are not just for listing your qualifications or traits. You can put in your achievements in small crisp sentences and don’t forget to put a period at the end of each of those bulletin points.

Always use business letter format when you write a cover letter and keep it as professional as possible. In case you are sending your CV letter through an E-Mail, just put in the job post you are applying for and end with your name.

Let us now consider a list of guidelines to follow -

  • The Introductory paragraph
  • A well-structured introduction allows the recruiter to form a favourable opinion about you and your employment aspirations.

    So the first para paragraph is obviously a short paragraph to explain why you are writing to them. Do not forget to mention which job position you are applying for. It is also advisable to put in the source of information from where you came to know about the job opening.

    Next up, provide a brief introduction about yourself. Don’t waste too much explaining who you are.

  • The Middle Section -
  • Then comes the middle section of your Cover Letter where you will be required to use bullet points. Make sure to sell the idea of what you bring to the table through these bullet points.

    Mention the traits you have which fit best with the job qualifications required by the recruiter. This is the part where you need to highlight the relevant job experiences and achievements you have in the best way possible.


    Understatement of facts may lead to rejection because understatements almost always miss out on pointing out your X factor. Simply demonstrate as to why you are the one who deserves this job.

    Choose amongst your achievements and job experiences and tailor what you represent.

  • The Closing Line
  • The closing section is not to be neglected because it comes right underneath your bulletin points. You would prefer holding onto their attention. Don’t sound pessimistic or worried. Instead, leave a space for a closing line with a positive note which borderlines on hope. Since you are following a business letter format do not forget to put in your signature.

Here are some tips for writing Bullet Points

  • Do not copy-paste the content from your resume while writing the cv bullet points.
  • Do not use words and phrases from the job offer advertisement or job posting.
  • Writing unique and shorter sentences to demonstrate a closely related trait or experience will help you.
  • List the things you are expert at. Throw in some real-life experiences demonstrating that you are indeed an expert in that field.
  • Don’t include every information out there about you. It’s about creating highlights and not putting up the entire show.
  • Try to be persuasive and do not come off as snobbish.
  • It will be better if you write one cover letter encompassing every possible job offer you might be getting. Then move those bulletin points up and down or remove some of them to be a better fit to the job opening you are applying for.
  • Leave an equal amount of space for cover letter margins. If you use proportionate margins, your document is likely to look more professional and easy on the eyes
